In Celebration of Local Farming and Winemaking
All the culture of local agriculture and viticulture are kept alive at Vintage New York, which serves and sells a dazzling array of New York State wine and food, and
whose motto is “Think Global, Drink Local.” Please join for a best-of-local
tasting. Enjoy the benefits of eating, drinking, buying and being local as
you sample wine, apples, cheeses and breads and get to know the growers. Afterwards,
we encourage you to dine out at area restaurants that support local food and
farming, an expanding list of which can be found at www.vergant.com/growing.htm.
Cheese-Making, Bread Baking and More...
Cheesemaking and bread-baking will be in full swing when we arrive at Nina
and Jonathan White’s Bobolink Dairy and Bakeyard. After demonstrations and tastings, we will take to the fields, where the farm’s
happy cows graze on 200 acres of native pasture grass, followed by a light
lunch with the family and time to shop at the farmstand.
Ryder Farm Jam Sessions
Savor a visit to 200-year-old Ryder Farm in Brewster, New York. This historic
family-owned farm boasts 130 acres of woods, fields, pastures, ponds and
organic fruit, vegetable and flower gardens. After lunch on the back porch
of the Sycamores homestead, during which we’ll discuss Community Supported
Agriculture, Willing Workers on Farms, Greenmarkets and all the many ways
in which we can participate in and support local agriculture, we will enjoy
walking tours with Hall Gibson and Betsey Ryder and a jam session (strawberry/rhubarb,
raspberry, blackberry, apple and/or pear, depending on the season). Everyone
gets warm jam over ice cream and a jar of self-made to take home.
Birds of Prey Day: Finding Our Place in Nature
For more than 50 years, Green Chimneys Farm School of Brewster, New York, has pioneered programs and therapies that prove and improve
upon the interdependencies of humans and nature. Among other things, the students
that go to school here grow their own food, tend rare breeds of barnyard animals
and rehabilitate injured wildlife. Join us for a private tour of Green Chimneys’
organic gardens, farm and wildlife center and attend the school’s annual Birds
of Prey Day, which includes environmental exhibits and speakers, falconry demonstrations,
and the release of rehabilitated birds back to the wild.
